Collection: Phil D

Phil studied Fine Art and Sculpture, beginning his career as a self taught commercial artist and painter, his early work depicted architectural landmarks and cityscapes from his travels abroad, in particular Europe, the Balkan States, and South East Asia. This move was to have a profound affect on his passion for depicting the physicality, dynamic nature, and colour of the city landscape, and his curiosity for capturing the sense of individual reality and personal journey within the anonymous crowds he viewed on these travels.

This desire to evoke and emphasise a sense of an individuals personal journey and navigation through the wider world, gave way to an increasing desire to work with oil and acrylic paint, whereby he could achieve these core messages and narratives. With it’s colourful vibrancy and versatility as a medium, oils and acrylics were a more suited approach towards capturing his artistic philosophy with a clearer and more powerful impact.

These very stylised and emotionally heightened landscapes, portraits, and figurative pieces combine the spontaneous application of vivid colours, with a multi layered approach that is achieved through blending stencil printing and expressive brushstrokes. This style, being a constant morphing of two differing processes, creates rich and textured images where creative instinct and fine detail are portrayed and juxtaposed alongside each other. In this experimentation with unusual ways of blending printing and paint layering, his style seeks to blur the distinctions between the finer points of traditional painting and raw creative instinct, therefore creating new and interesting ways of applying colour, building abstract texture, and evoking complex narratives around the existential nature of life.

His way of working tackles two emotional extremes - isolation, and the sense of loneliness and solitude in trying to make sense of one’s place in the world; and the desire for togetherness and unity. Both these narratives are expressed with equal intensity, thus paying attention to the duality and contradiction of human nature in a big wide world, the part that desires personal connection with others in this life, and the other part that at various points prefers personal space and freedom; and the desire to express the restless spirit and emotional intensity that exists in the individual human condition.

This dominant theme is reflected in how and what he paints. Some of the artist’s own personal tensions, passions and heightened sense of emotional intensity with his place in the world are incorporated into the work he does, almost as if even in moments where he tries to empathise with the personal journey of an anonymous stranger in an urban environment, he injects a lot of his own journey into the subject. The sense of disconnection and dissonance is also prevalent, as if trying to convey that we are in, but not necessarily part of, the landscape we inhabit, our existence in the world is all about our individual drives, our positive and negative emotional energies and personalities we bring to the world, and how we leave traces of our being.
