Charley

Charley began painting in oils around the age of 8 after being inspired by visiting an impressionist painting exhibition including Van Gogh and Gauguin. This initial inspiration of colour and expression still resonates in his work. He comes from an artistic family and has always painted and dreamed of being an artist all of his life. 
He studied painting at University level at Nottingham Trent University. However he feels mostly influenced by travelling the world and mainly South America. In recent years, and with the birth of his son, he decided to dedicate himself solely to painting and the arts. and within this time he has achieved numerous exhibitions worldwide in London, San Francisco, Colombia and Canada.
'My paintings are mainly about discovering the possibilities with portraiture and figurative painting. I create bold energetic, but at the same time sensitive paintings, using loose expressive brushstrokes and vivid colour to capture emotion and light. I have also used the same techniques in landscape and abstract painting, and I try to fuse abstract painting within my brushstrokes even within the more realistic paintings that I may do.
I have been compelled to capture the soul of people in portraiture and also contemplate contemporary social issues such as migration and our connection with nature . I have always been influenced since childhood by the impressionist painters but have also been heavily influenced by Turner and Rembrandt. I am always developing my painting technique, and I do conscientiously try not to stay with one particular style, rather challenge my development and surprise myself by pushing my painting process each day in the studio.'
